Today, I'm taking it easy after a busy day in the city. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to moderate a panel for Life In The Pause, an event for women of color in peri-menopause and menopause. It was a great event, and the panel I spoke on (nutrition in the pause) went well. I left feeling warm from the community, gained new knowledge on self-care during this new chapter, and felt reassured that everything is going to be okay. It was comforting to realize that I'm not broken, and neither are you - it's just a new phase of life, almost like a second puberty.
Here are some important facts and and a FREE bonus, read on:
Peri-menopause can start as early as 35 (I think I started at 37), and most of us in our 30s aren't thinking about menopause or planning for it. It's time to start!
There are over 100 peri-menopause/menopause symptoms. I've been dealing with the following symptoms during my journey:
achy joints
night sweats
heart palpitations
brain fog
dry skin
thinning hair
thick and brittle nails/toenails
increased blood sugar levels
increased cholesterolweight gain
low libido
Anxiety
strong body odor
Insomnia
I used to think I was broken, just part of aging, different unconnected ailments.
Peri-menopause can last a few months to 15 years before menopause.
Menopause happens when you have gone 12 months in a row without a period.
You can still get pregnant during peri-menopause.
Peri-menopause is diagnosed by symptoms and irregular periods.
Some medical procedures can induce peri-menopause/menopause.
The event made me realize that I want to share what I've learned and my journey with the Daily Ritual Community! I want to keep these conversations going and answer your questions about peri-menopause. I'll be working on a new video series for my YouTube Channel to address your questions and topics. Please post your questions in the comments, or suggest topics you want me to discuss.
In the meantime if you are looking for peri-menopause or menopause care/support from a certified provider, check out the following:
And here's your FREE bonus, well it's really a valuable tip. It's National Menopause Month, the perfect time to talk more about the challenges faced by women during this phase of life. PBS will be airing an amazing documentary called "The M Factor: Shedding Silence on Menopause" on October 17th. You can catch the preview and clips HERE.
I look forward to answering your questions!
With love and wellness,
Crystal
