May Topic - Adapting Your Health Impairment or Learning Disability To Work

In my 9-5 I work as project manager. I recently reached out to a vendor for assistance with our project management platform. To my delight I got the following auto response:

Thank you for reaching out!

Your message has landed in my inbox, and I want to assure you that it's important to me. Due to a high volume of work and the unique ways my brain navigates through tasks (thank you, ADHD superpowers!), I'm implementing a new system to ensure I can give each message the attention it deserves.

Here's how we can work together effectively:

  • Response Time: Please expect a response within 48 hours. This window helps me manage my tasks more efficiently and ensures your query gets the attention it needs.

  • Project Requests and Work Queries: To make sure your work requests are logged and tracked properly, kindly resend them to ((email removed for privacy)). Our dedicated team will ensure your request is addressed promptly.

  • Urgent Matters: If you have an urgent issue, the fastest way to get my attention is via WhatsApp. I'm here to help, but I ask kindly: no calls, please. Written messages help me keep track of our action items effectively.

My ADHD is a part of who I am: it can be a superpower and, at times, a challenge. Implementing this system is a step towards harnessing that power for efficiency and productivity. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we navigate this together.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Your support means the world to me, and I look forward to our continued collaboration.

Best wishes

WOW!!! THIS!!! This is an amazing form of selcare, putting yourself first so you can do a job well done/help others, while setting boundaries that won't impeed on her health.

I'm assuming her employer was aware of her impairment/disability and made space for her to be her, to allow her to set boundaries and do amazing work that works on her terms, while taking her health and wellness into consideration. I wanted to share this with you to show you how you can make space for yourself at your job, and give you courage to have conversations with your employer around how you can make work, work for you by putting your health and wellness first. We have more power than we think, there are small changes we can make daily to work with ease.

"What if my employer doesn't prioritize employees overall health, wellness, and work styles", you might ask. Honestly, if an employer can't make space for all of you, then it's not the place for you! I truely feel that employers should be willing to wihtout question to assisst inthese areas. People are not robots or machines, we are human and so many things come with being human. If you are familar with my story I walked out of a job due to poor treameant, so you shouldn't settle when it comes to any kind of impairement or disability you might have, or an employer sees as a challenge/negative.

So, what changes and conversations can you have to adapt how you work if you have a health impariment or learning disability?

With love and wellness, Crystal Garcia

Would you send out an email response like this to make work, work for you?

  • I'm aleady doing something similar 😁

  • No, I would be too afraid or hate to inconvenience others 🤦
