A salon is a gathering hosted to exchange ideas, often focused on education and entertainment, inspired by Horace’s idea of poetry to “please or educate.” Originating in 16th-century Italy and flourishing in 17th- and 18th-century France, salons became spaces for intellectual and literary discussions, frequently hosted by educated women. The gatherings were informal, often held in private settings like bedrooms, and laid the groundwork for cultural and philosophical movements. The concept later spread to Britain, where Charles Babbage adapted it into scientific soirées in the 19th century.
